It’s the Christmas Season, not the Holiday Season

Dear Sir,

I’m writing this missive to express my sadness and anger regarding the widespread substitution of the word “holiday” for Christmas in our country today.

We do NOT buy “holiday gifts.” When was the last time you received a Memorial Day gift? We do NOT receive “holiday bonuses” from our employers. We do NOT erect and decorate “holiday trees.” Does anyone decorate a tree on Independence Day? We do NOT go “holiday shopping.”

Holiday season? Sure, there’s Christmas and New Years. Fine and dandy. But all the rest of this “holiday,” rampant, over usage is political correctness run amok. Please, all you broadcast media, print media, and merchants, stop already! Recognize it for what it is. CHRISTMAS! The celebration of the birthday of Jesus Christ!

Are you afraid of offending someone? Well, our country existed for over 200 years calling the birth of Jesus CHRISTMAS and we got along just fine. Personally, as a Christian, I’m offended that we keep sterilizing Christmas into just another “holiday.”

Heaven help us!

Anonymous said...: Well. Not all readers; consumers; believe in Christ. Mainstream media; retailers etc.....don't only cater to those of Christian faith. They need to paint with a broader brush in order to survive. Why isn't it enough that you and your fellow believers call it Christmas? Last I checked there were more than a handful of Christian channels on television and you already got all the chik-fil-a's. You know who should be mad? George Costanza's dad. Im with him in expressing my outrage about the total lack of the liberal media's mention of festivus!!!!!! A FESTIVUS FOR THE REST OF US!!!!!!!!! Events to Remember

LEPC meeting - The Darke County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) will meet on June 18, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Darke County EMA, 5183 County Home Rd. All meetings are open for public attendance.

Arcanum BOE - The Arcanum-Butler local Board of Education will hold its regular board of education meeting on the third Thursday, June 20, 2013, at 7 p.m. in the Board of Education office.

VHS class reunion – The Versailles High School Class of 1968 is celebrating its 45th year reunion on June 22, at the Veteran’s Memorial Building, 106 South Center St., Versailles. A social hour will begin at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m. A group photo will be taken at 7 p.m. If you have not submitted your RSVP and would like to attend, contact Cyndi Bey, 526-3313.

Chicken Noodle Dinner – Joan’s Kids Relay Team will be having a chicken noodle dinner June 18 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Bradford Community Club on Miami Avenue. For carry-outs, please call Debbie at 448-2845.

Bradford BOE – The Bradford Exempted Village School District Board of Education will meet in regular session, 6:30 p.m., on June 19, room 404. The public is welcome to attend.

Versailles BOE – The regular June and July Versailles Board of Education meetings for the dates and times have changed. The meetings will now be June 26, 7 a.m., and July 17, 7 a.m., at the board office.

FM Class of 73 – Franklin Monroe Class of 1973 will be celebrating its 40th year reunion on July 20, 2013. It will be at the Pitsburg Town Hall (Firehouse), 3 p.m. All attendees are asked to bring a dish to share. Meat, cheese, buns, drinks, and table service will be provided. GHS Class of 1969 - The Greenville Class of 1969 will hold its annual mini-reunion on Aug. 17, 2-4 p.m. at the Elks Lounge on Third and Sycamore, Greenville. Please park in the Elks back parking lot and enter through the back door. The class will begin planning for its 45th reunion on June 15 at 1:30 p.m. at the Maid-Rite shelter house. Class members should plan to attend the June 15 meeting if they wish to voice their opinions concerning the location and type of reunion for 2014. Help is needed to contact class members for the large event. For more information, contact Debby Sodders at 548-7951. All class members are welcome on both dates.

Alumni Banquet - The 2013 Westmont, Hollansburg and Palestine Alumni Banquet will be held June 15 at the Golden Eagle Christian Center in Palestine. The time to arrive is 4 p.m. with dinner served at 5 p.m. The theme this year is “An Italian Experience.” Everyone is welcome that attended Westmont, Hollansburg, and Palestine; even if you did not graduate from there.
